It's just Jenner-al Knowledge

Trends – they’re everywhere. From the ‘Rachel’ hair do (if you fail to register this as a Friends reference: get out), to our ‘well known’ pal DJ Casper’s Cha Cha Slide. Now 2016 sees another revolutionary trend consume us, with a particularly strong following of young women.

I cannot depict one girls face from another these days, as all seem to portray an illusion of symmetry. Brows garnished with a sleek shadow, fake lashes and lips so plump it’s as though they’ve held the wrong end of the hover to their faces.

Of course, I find the leader and source of these puffy peckers to be the seemingly most significant, idyllic celebrity unit of the modern world: The Jenner family. A notorious stateside family who seem to own the 21st Century Britain in a way that David Cameron wished he could. It’s particularly the adolescence: Kendal and Kylie Jenner who have the most sizeable impact.

Kylie, 18, flaunts images of her lips on an Instagram account followed by millions. They vary in size, sparking speculation in to whether they are the result of surgery or not. This doesn’t seem to matter to her (figure) followers, as the majority of those who are women tend to seek to replicate them themselves either way. Kylie objectifies herself in a way that infers it is okay for others to do so – she has (debatably) cleverly created what is a ‘product’ of herself; she is a brand and like all large brands, appeals to young women who want to invest.

Kylie’s social status has seen her this year bring out a 20-piece nail varnish range with colours under the imaginative names: Slay Grey, Kween, Da New Black*, and Karame. To put her power into context, the adolescent owns a $2.7 million Californian mansion that she purchased in 2015, and that year was crowned the most watched person on popular social media app Snapchat.

Whilst some revel in it, the power one family has over what we chose to wear and even whom we try to identify as scares me. I wonder what extent these individuals can push their ‘celebrity’ status and for how long they’ll be able to sustain a hold over the younger generation.

*Unless Da New Black is not black, then it’s just black. Da Same Owld Black.
